Profile

Derek Hattemer is a Ph.D. Candidate at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa and the University of Basel. In Winter Semester 2023/24 he joined the Chair for Social and Economic History as a visiting scholar and is currently a full-time visiting lecturer.

In his Ph.D. dissertation (“Underwriting Autarchy: Commercial Life Insurance for the Masses in Interwar Italy and Germany”) he examines the promotion of mass life insurance policies under the Fascist and Nazi dictatorships as an ideologically palatable alternative to social insurance for the savings economies and mixed welfare systems of both regimes.
