European History of the Middle Ages: Late Middle Ages
Medieval History offers courses and research opportunities across the entire spectrum of European Medieval History (500-1500 A.D.). Within the unit, medieval Europe is studied as a sphere of communication constituted of, and interwoven on, multiple levels. The political communication of late medieval councils as well as imperial and estate assemblies was articulated through a framework of regulated negotiation processes, group-specific representation and superordinate concepts of attribution. Medieval History II also engages in the study of Renaissance culture, focusing particularly on the role of the scholar. Through the transformation of ancient literature, the scholar – influenced by Latin humanist discourse – evoked new orders of knowledge and concepts of a nation. At the same time, through the formation of an international and supranational community of scholars, he opened the possibility to transcend precisely these nationalities.
