What is Erasmus?

As part of EU education programmes, Erasmus has been promoting exchanges among universities in Europe for over 20 years.

Since 2014-15, Erasmus has brought together existing EU programmes for lifelong learning, youth, and sport, and the European cooperation programmes in higher education – the latter mostly organised through bilateral agreements between institutes and subjects.

The Institute for History (IfG) currently maintains contacts with history institutes at about 30 universities in about 15 European countries in order to ensure the international exchange and mobility of students and teachers.

The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) enables the recognition of credits earned abroad so that students who study abroad are not disadvantaged in the course of their studies. In addition, the semesters abroad are not counted as subject semesters but are treated as a leave of absence from the home institution.

Financial support for Erasmus students makes it easier for them to go abroad, although this can only cover additional costs.

A study abroad experience not only expands your professional horizons, but also your personal ones.

As an ERAMUS student you get the opportunity to get to know a country-specific point of view and to study new topics and methods.

In addition to these content-oriented advantages, knowledge of foreign languages is also improved, intercultural skills are honed and important contacts are made.

Last, but not least, a stay abroad can open doors to interesting jobs after graduation.
