Financing
Participation in the Erasmus programme not only enables you to save on tuition fees at your partner university, but also provides you with a scholarship.
The amount of the scholarship is based on the cost of living in the host country and is divided into the following country groups:
- Country group A/ 450 € per month: AT, CH, DK, FI, FR, IE, IT, LI, NO, SE, UK
- Country group B/ 390 € per month: BE, CY, CZ, (DE), ES, GR, HR, IS, LU, NL, PT, SI, TR
- Country group C/ 330 € per month: BG, EE, HU, LT, LV, MT, PL, RO, SK

The maximum funding period varies depending on the duration of the study:
Maximum funding periods:
- 1 semester 4 months
- 2 semesters 8 months
or for the UK:
- 1 term 3 months
- 2 term 5 months
- 3 term 8 months
This means, for example, that for an Erasmus stay of two semesters at a French partner university a maximum of 3,120 € will be awarded as a scholarship (390 € / month x 8 months max. funding period).
Please note that the monthly rate and the maximum funding period can change annually and depend on the total number of HU applicants.
The payment is made in two instalments: approximately 2/3 of the grant is paid at the beginning and the remaining 1/3 after completion of the study abroad.
When will the first instalment be paid?
The following requirements must be met:
- Submission of the Grant Agreement (deadline: 30 June)
- Submission of the Learning Agreement (deadline: 30 June)
- Completion of the 1st language test of the OLS (link will be sent by e-mail)
- Confirmation of Registration (deadline: two weeks after arrival at the partner university)
All documents must be submitted by email to the Erasmus Office of the IfG (erasmus.geschichte@hu-berlin.de) and to the International Office by post or email.

When will the second instalment be paid?
The following requirements must be met:
- Confirmation for Student Stay Abroad (deadline: 2 weeks after end of stay)
- Completion of the 2nd language test of the OLS (reminder emails will not be sent!)
- Experience report (deadline: 2 weeks after the end of the stay). A further report must also be sent to the European Union (via the OLS portal).
- Transcript of Records (deadline: 1 October) with at least 21 ECTS passed per semester / term
The second instalment disburses the entire remaining amount according to the amount stipulated by the maximum funding period.
If you are going abroad for two semesters, you must make sure that you send a new enrolment certificate to the HU for the second semester if the first certificate does not mention the entire period of study abroad.
There is no subsidy for non-certified semesters!!
Specifics of the Erasmus Scholarship
Hardship Claim
If the minimum of 21 ECTS per semester / term is not reached, an application for hardship must be made. This must explain the reasons why the required ECTS was not achieved or not passed. Further information can be found in the general Erasmus office hour.
Children travelling with you
For children travelling with you, a subsidy of 200 € per month is also paid. The first instalment will be paid once the confirmation of registration has been received from the host university. The second child benefit instalment can be paid in January.
Students with disabilities
Students with disabilities receive a grant of the necessary amount upon application.
Additional financing options
BAföG supports study visits abroad
BAföG recipients receive the same support as non-BAföG recipients.
According to the BAföG-Auslandszuschlagverordnung, benefits for schooling abroad include travel expenses and the cost of health insurance coverage abroad, if needed.
The additional benefits under the BAföG-Auslandszuschlagverordnung are paid in full as a grant and do not need to be repaid at a later date. Only students who receive assistance as a loan also receive the benefits under the BAföG-Auslandszuschlagverordnung as a bank loan.

Education loan
Since 2001 it has been possible to take out a loan to defray educational expenses. For up to 24 months a loan of 300 EUR per month is paid.
