Current research

Anne MacKinney works on the history of collections and media of collection management as well as on the intersections between museums, science, government and commerce. Her dissertation, which she completed in 2020 at the Chair for the History of Science, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, investigates the history of documentary paperwork — lists, catalogs, registers and inventories — in Prussian natural historical collections between 1770 and 1850. She is currently preparing her first book, Nature's Registry, based on this research. Her work has been funded by the DFG Research Training Group "Small Forms" at HU Berlin (Institute for German Literature) and the Center of Natural History at the Universität Hamburg. In the winter semester 2020/2021 she is teaching a course on "Collecting the Natural World: Museums, Science and the State. 18th-20th c."
